Natasha woke with a start and sat up in bed. Goddamn nightmare. With as long as she lived and with what she did for a living it wasn’t a wonder her dreams were plagued with nightmares, but this one, this one had been with her almost her whole life.
She rubbed the bridge of her nose and shivered. Her skin was damp with sweat despite December outside trying to get in.
The nightmare had seemed so real she’d swear she could feel the heat of the fire and the smell of the smoke. She had been so young when it happened, yet she remembered it clearly.
Stalingrad had been under siege by the Germans. Her mother and she had remained at home while her father and brothers…yes, brothers left to fight in the war and defend their city. She could remember their faces, but not their names. Her mother and she got by, but then came the explosion from enemy artillery and the house caught on fire. The fire blocked their escape route and they had been trapped inside the burning building.
Her lungs screamed for air and felt like they were on fire. She cried out for her mother in between coughing. Arms went around her and picked her up, her mother holding her tightly against her. Soft words of encouragement came, but even at that age she could hear the panic and fear in them.
If she closed her eyes she could see her mother’s expression of panic and the tears falling down her cheeks. Then Natasha was falling through the cold night air and into the arms of a waiting soldier. More explosions rocked the building and it came crumbling down. She remembered calling out for her mother, but only the roaring of the fire answered her.
Natasha took a deep breath and wrapped her arms around herself. She hated that nightmare. It had been haunting her for her whole life.
She was not going to get back to sleep anytime soon so she climbed out of bed and slipped her robe on. It was time to make some tea and wrap some presents. Anything to get her mind off the fire and smoke from her dream.

A pause.
"A laser cutter would come in very handy."

She set the mugs down on the counter and then wrapped her arms around him. "I'm surprised you're not forging them yourself."

She snuggled in against his chest for warmth and comfort.
"It's kind of funny we're talking about adding stuff to the ring. I was going to talk to you about retiring from S.H.I.E.L.D. for awhile."

He blinks a little. "You? Retire?"

"You do realize that something will eventually drag me back in, right? I've tried this a few times and it never quite takes, but I'll give it my best shot."
